Western Mass Dispensaries

The Berkshires and Pioneer Valley pack the highest dispensary density per capita in the state. Craft cannabis, cultural tourism, and some of the best flower in New England.

Last verified: March 2026

Western Massachusetts has quietly built one of the most interesting cannabis markets in New England. Berkshire County leads the state at 18.9 dispensaries per 100,000 residents, and neighboring Hampshire County follows at 16.6. The combination of tourism-driven demand, progressive local politics, and craft-oriented operators has created a region where dispensary visits pair naturally with cultural attractions.

The Berkshires

Berkshire Roots — Pittsfield

The crown jewel of Berkshire County cannabis. Berkshire Roots has built its reputation on craft-grown, award-winning flower that competes with the best in New England. The cultivation team focuses on quality over volume, and it shows in the product. If you are in the Berkshires for any reason, this is the dispensary to visit.

Canna Provisions — Lee

Positioned in Lee, right off the Mass Pike (I-90), Canna Provisions is a natural stop for visitors heading to Tanglewood, the Norman Rockwell Museum, or ski areas. The location has become a Western Mass tourist stop in its own right, with visitors from New York and Connecticut making it part of their Berkshire weekend itinerary. Also operates a second location in Holyoke.

Theory Wellness — Great Barrington

Great Barrington is the cultural hub of southern Berkshire County, and Theory Wellness fits the town's artisanal, farm-to-table sensibility. The operator takes a craft approach that resonates with the Great Barrington customer base. Theory also operates in Chicopee, Medford, and Bridgewater, and runs locations in Maine.

Cannabis + Culture

Pair your dispensary visit with Western Mass cultural attractions. MASS MoCA in North Adams is one of the largest contemporary art museums in the country. Tanglewood in Lenox hosts the Boston Symphony Orchestra each summer. Both are within easy driving distance of Berkshire County dispensaries — just do not consume before driving.

Pioneer Valley

NETA — Northampton

NETA Northampton is one of the original two recreational cannabis stores in Massachusetts, and it remains one of the busiest. Northampton's identity as a progressive college town (Smith College, with UMass Amherst and Amherst College nearby) creates strong year-round demand. The store is centrally located and draws visitors from the entire Pioneer Valley.

INSA — Easthampton

Just minutes from Northampton, INSA operates in the neighboring town of Easthampton. The company is known for its $200 new patient credit for medical patients and competitive recreational pricing. INSA also has locations in Springfield and Salem.

Trulieve — Northampton

Trulieve's Northampton location benefits from the city's strong cannabis market. The company operates an indoor cultivation facility in Holyoke that feeds its Massachusetts retail locations, giving it supply chain advantages in freshness and availability.
